Metaphor essay questions

Presently, I can see that the paper I am writing is wrought with metaphor. It is not that metaphor is so much a mystery, but rather it is a clue to the mystery being solved. In the poem "Inscription Facing Western Sea" W.S. Merwin writes a poem expressing a war of the sea on land.

Since metaphors are sneaky they easily place themselves into our language and become unconscious mental guides by which we make meaning out of our experiences. Lakoff and Johnson call them “conceptual metaphors”. They are a clandestine force informing how you should think and how you should act.

For some of us, certain events or observations leave us at a loss for good descriptive words, and it is in those moments that a well-worn metaphor, simile or analogy is put to use.

The metaphors Charlotte makes for her mother and Miss Hancock are very accurate. Charlotte compares her mother to a “white picket fence” with “thorny bushes and barbed wire” on the other side (72). Charlotte’s mother is a very beautiful person on the outside. She has great hair and a great figure, but deep down she is not that good of a person.
